This walking tour visits sites in Pittsburgh's Fifth Avenue corridor where 20th century syndicated crime history was made. Visit the places that once housed numbers banks, nightclubs, and rackets front businesses. Learn the stories about the people and activities that once occupied Uptown locations. Many of the buildings are gone and all that remains are the stories, historical photos, and maps.
This is the first of several MobsBurgh walking tours through city neighborhoods. MobsBurgh is a project documenting Pittsburgh's numbers gambling history. Registrants will receive an indictment — email — the day before the tour with their courtroom number — meeting location — and other last-minute details.
Due to the pandemic, this tour is limited to a small group. All activities will be outdoors. The tour will be conducted in accordance with CDC, state, and local public health guidelines in place on the tour date. Participants not adhering to the public health protocols will be asked to leave the tour.
Wear comfortable walking shoes; hat and water bottle recommended. The tour will take place rain or shine. A rain date will be announced in case of heavy rain or thunderstorms.
